Stanislas Lahaut

BIO / SELECTED WORKS / CATALOGUE

Stanislas Lahaut (BE,1979) lives and works in Ghent, Belgium.

Texts works, installations and sculptures are characterized by his tragicomic yet poetic approach of daily life and the absurd mechanisms of the (art) world. Stanislas always departs from his own life in his art practice. Rather than processing large gestures in his art, he places a poetic or playful footnote with our everyday life through minimal interventions. Lahaut attempts to make us look at the world with differect eyes by providing found objects or situations with a subtle twist, with a new layer of meaning. In many cases, his work consequently evolves from simple thoughts or observations. His reflections are far from determining or teachinh, but they reveal the pendulum movement between his daily experiences and his own reflections on it. Lahaut’s multi-layered images are destensible and often contain double bottoms. His artistic practice seems to be an ongoing attemt to reconcile the weight of life with an everyday lightness. Lauhaut uses small things, almost insignificant things, to make well-aimed digs at contemporary man and his state of indifference. He uses playfullness as a strategy for broaching serious and essential matters. He gets a party going, but also immediately shows the day after too.
